earl luster pigments (pearlescent) are shimmering pigments that are distinguished from other pigments precisely by their luster. They are small, flat, thin flakes with proportionally large diameters and smooth surfaces. Their particular characteristics of flat structure, high refractive index and transparency produce, in transparent media and as a consequence of the multiple reflection of light, effects that match the luster of pearls or mother-of-pearl. Metallic or similar effects can also be achieved without causing observable damage to metals or metal alloys. Pearlescent pigments are special micas that are highly resistant to light. In an elaborate process, the mica flakes are coated with titanium oxide and/or iron oxide. The pearlescent pigments are available in different particle sizes; the gloss varies according to the particle size, from silky matte to a brilliant sheen. MIRA(MIRAVAL)® pigments based on synthetic borosilicate flakes (a type of synthetic gemstone) have extraordinarily flat surfaces. With their brilliant, richly colored sparkles and strong shimmer, they give surfaces a touch of extravagance. MIRA pearlescent pigments are almost colorless, transparent pigments that produce a brilliant color effect on dark backgrounds, which looks especially brilliant with glossy binders. With the MIRA(MIRAVAL)® pigments, delicate aluminum spangle effects are achieved.
